Israel reportedly has informed the United States that it will respond with disproportionate force if Hezbollah targets Israeli civilians in retaliation for the assassination of its top military commander in Beirut. Despite this warning, Israeli officials maintain that they do not wish to escalate into a broader conflict with Hezbollah, even though Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah signaled Aug. 6 that retaliation is certain. Israel also remains on high alert for potential responses from Iran and its allies following the assassination of Hamas' political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Intelligence suggests that Hezbollah may launch an independent retaliation, separate from Iranian actions. Consequently, Israeli officials are working to establish clear red lines with Hezbollah.
