Notable Arrests Made in Angola

Summary

Early on Sept. 28, Angola's Maritime Border Police arrested 48 people who had landed on a remote beach in Cacuaco municipality, approximately 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) north of Luanda. The detained individuals reportedly arrived from Guinea-Bissau and Guinea, although it is unclear if they were of Bissau-Guinean and Guinean descent.

The detainees could simply be economic refugees seeking better opportunities in Angola's more prosperous environment. But only 10 years have passed since Angola concluded its nearly 27-year civil war, and despite a decade of relative peace and prosperity, the country remains deeply divided. Since Guinea-Bissau and Guinea have been known to host Angolan rebel leaders in the past, the arrests are noteworthy and provide an opportunity to assess the current state of security and stability in Angola.
